In 1987, Fran Heitzman, a former entrepreneur and the custodian at Pax Christi Church, received an unusual request: could the church use a donated piece of furniture?

 

He said no—but he saw a bigger opportunity. Fran made a few calls, found a social service agency that needed the item, and delivered it himself. That single act of kindness sparked a movement—Bridging was born. The idea was simple but powerful: connect those who have with those who have not.

 

Today, that mission has grown into the largest furniture bank in the United States, serving more than 13,000 people annually as they transition to housing stability.
