The Director of Human Resources is responsible for the overall leadership, strategic planning, coordination, and execution of the transformational change of the Human Resources function. This role is responsible for building and maintaining the systems for the recruitment and retention of talent within the museum while demonstrating an effective balance of the strategic and tactical operations work of HR. The HR Director is responsible for creating, directing, and executing the practices and programs needed to support business goals and promote a positive culture, including management consulting, workforce planning and talent acquisition, organizational design and effectiveness, employee and leadership development, performance management, succession planning, compensation, recognition, benefit design, implementation, and employee relations. This role supports the SMM’s compelling and principled strategic vision to support diversity, promote inclusion, increase access, and achieve equity in bringing about meaningful and lasting institutional change.


  • Directs company-wide organizational change initiatives and practices that support the business strategy, including organization cultural assessment, organizational development initiatives, leadership development, engagement programs, and performance management process.
  • Deeply commits to continuing personal work on equity & inclusion while leading staff and collaborating with peers on racial equity
  • Supports and collaborates with the senior leadership team in the development and cultivation of an organizational culture that promotes the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
  • Actively models competency as an HR Business Partner to the senior leadership team, leading the  change to a center of excellence structure for HR
  • Directs and oversees all HR functions of the organization as we rebuild from the ground up and move to a COE model and develop a high-performing HR team
  • Creates innovative systems and programs for the attraction, recruitment, and retention of talent.
  • Develops an effective HR Business Partner model for the museum. Provides effective coaching and counsel on HR issues involving employee relations, and leadership effectiveness. Recommends development plans, processes, and programs to meet specific departmental and individual needs.
  • Develops and implements innovative and effective sourcing and selection practices and programs. Supports the organizational structure by developing a workforce strategy, job profiles, and staffing levels to effectively accomplish company goals and objectives. 
  • Leads the design, development, communication, and implementation of compensation and incentive programs aligned with the museum’s strategy, business objectives, and market competitiveness.
  • Directs the development and administration of all employee benefit programs, including, but not limited to, health care insurance, paid time off and holiday schedules, incentive compensation, and other employee benefits agreed to by management.
  • Manages HR budget and provides strategic solutions for HR practices within budget guidelines.
  • Guides management and employee actions by researching, developing, writing, and updating policies, procedures, methods, and guidelines; communicating and enforcing organization values.
  • Directs and ensures all HR programs and services for employees are in compliance with all applicable laws, guidelines, and regulations. Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; advising management on needed actions.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

  • Management: Coaches and develops employees by providing feedback, development opportunities, and work direction while creating a sense of connection and belonging amongst staff and volunteers.


  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent experience and 8 years of progressive HR and leadership experience.
  • Proven experience leading an HR department.
  • Cultural competency and experience working with diverse communities
  • Language fluency in addition to English is valued but not required.  
  • Proven experience with a Human Resources Information System (HRIS). Experience with UKG Software is preferred. 


The annual salary range for this role will be $130,000 to $140,000 commensurate with qualifications and experience. In addition, the Science Museum of Minnesota offers excellent benefits including group health insurance, dental/vision, 403b retirement match, PTO, and more.
